High School Welcomes Students & Families to Spring Open House & Showcase
Weston-McEwen High School students and families and community members were invited to the annual Open House/Showcase at the school on the evening of April 10th. Morgan Rauch, Principal of WMHS, said the purpose of the event is for students to show some of the projects they have been working on, such as art, music, foods and shop classes. The event is also designed to showcase different clubs and activities that students can participate in at WMHS.
“The spring open house and showcase is a great time for us to celebrate student accomplishments from the year and to show current and prospective students what they can be involved in at our school,” Rauch said.
The event included an art show, shop projects on display, music demonstrations, School to Careers booth, tables promoting school organizations and a macaroni and cheese cook-off prepared by students in the foods classes.
Patti Baker, Substitute Teacher in the foods classes, explained that the students decided on the mac-and-cheese idea and they could use any kind of cheeses they wanted plus other ingredients like bacon. They also made breadsticks and cookies. People attending could try all the mac-and-cheese dishes and vote for their favorite. “They learned a lot as far as how to make the sauces, what temperatures to cook them at and how to cook for a crowd. And they made everything from scratch,” Baker said.
Julie West, Art/Graphics Teacher, worked with her students to create artwork to be sold at the event, including pottery and magnets. There was also a judged art show with prizes awarded afterward. West said the students worked really hard to get everything done and were excited about the event. Classes that West teaches are painting, ceramics, graphic design and photography. “I think students like art because they can relax. They also are learning skills they can use out in the world that they didn’t realize until they started the class like perseverance and pride in their work,” West said.
WMHS leaders thank everyone who made the event possible and who attended.
